Design 2: Pre-Production – Project ideas and moodboards

My major project proposal is to create an exterior environment, set in a Medieval period. This environment will be within a castle town and so, a focus will be on creating a nice balance between the standard houses of that period and then the fortifications too in the background. A huge enthasis will be on experimenting with a multitude of techniques in order to learn as much as I can, enhancing my employability.

These techniques will include modularity, tileable textures, trimsheets, vertex paintings and texel density. Fig.1 Shows an example of what I want within my pre-production document and the order that I will lay out the pages.

With this project in mind, I began exploring the idea and finding references of which to base my work on. Fig.2 shows real life examples of castles, an importance will be placed on using these especially for the texturing, as I believe the texturing of the castles will be more important than the modelling – in making sure they look realistic.

Fig.2 Shows general castle layouts, how they were laid out will be important as I want the castle to look at realistic as possible so understanding how each layer of the castles defence worked will be valuable.

Next is general concept arts I want to base the environment on, as I want to create the town the bottom image is the most relavent, however the compositions of these artwork should be studied further into why they’re successful, as that will help me decide the final camera angles.
